On behalf of the German Government, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is supporting developing countries and emerging economies in their fight against the coronavirus pandemic. For a number of years, GIZ has been working in cooperation countries in the area of pandemic preparedness and is involved in the fields of health systems and health care. On the basis of this experience, it is able rapidly and effectively to implement immediate measures on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and other commissioning parties to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
GIZ is also expanding current projects to include measures to fight the coronavirus pandemic without the need for additional financial resources. This includes projects that have not previously focused specifically on health and are now refocusing their activities in the short term.
For example, GIZ is assisting in providing urgently needed testing capacity and introducing notification systems. It is also promoting local procurement and production of protective equipment such as masks, gloves, protective clothing and disinfectants. And it continues to train health experts in recognising and treating infections.
To prevent the virus from spreading, it is also very important to provide the population with information about risks and recommended behaviour. GIZ is therefore collaborating with relevant government ministries in cooperation countries to design and implement information campaigns.
