Last chance to apply for the US exchange programme

A year in the USA for vocational training graduates

Bonn/Eschborn, 22 August 2019. For more than 35 years, the German Bundestag and the US Congress have offered young professionals the chance to spend time abroad and enhance their personal and career prospects.

The programme’s combination of vocational internships and college education is unique. The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Programme (CBYX) enables young professionals and students on a dual degree programme who have already completed their vocational training to spend a year in the USA and gain first-hand experience of its history, society and economy. By participating in the exchange programme, participants improve their career opportunities and actively contribute to improving transatlantic relations as junior ambassadors.

Members of the German Bundestag and the US Congress act as mentors for the American and German participants during their stay abroad. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been responsible for conducting the CBYX programme for more than 35 years and during this time has enabled 5,500 young German and US professionals to take part in the programme.

Scholarships are funded by the German Bundestag and the US Congress and cover the costs of preparation and follow-up for the visit, college studies, living with a host family, and travel and insurance.

Apprentices, students and young professionals who are interested in applying for the programme must have been born after 31 July 1995, have had several years of English lessons and have completed their vocational training by August 2020, when the exchange begins. All applications must be received by 13 September 2019.
