The number of homeless people is rising all around the world. The problem is particularly acute in cities. Eradicating poverty everywhere and in all its forms by the year 2030 is among the measures required for Germany to implement the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Another target involves ensuring access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing.
The German Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) launched a National Action Plan against Homelessness in 2024. This is the first Germany-wide strategy aimed at overcoming homelessness by 2030. Its objectives include deepening international cooperation in this area.
The project develops substantive and strategic recommendations for BMWSB to expand international cooperation arrangements tackling homelessness.
The project also supports the implementation of initial dialogues specifically with the United Kingdom, France, Poland and the United States. The main target group for these expert discussions are cities and communities in Germany and the partner countries.
The project is also working on international contributions for conferences in Germany, such as the annual congress for the National Action Plan and annual meetings of German associations. This involves preparing international solutions and challenges to present to German practitioners.
In addition, the project advises on agenda setting for the G7, comprising the seven largest industrialised nations, as well as for United Nations organisations and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The aim is to put homelessness higher up the international agenda.
