Context
The ASEAN region is becoming one of the global growth drivers and an important economic force in the world. Even after taking the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic into account, the region’s gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to nearly triple in 2040 compared to 2017, reaching 20 trillion US-Dollar by 2040. As reported in the ASEAN Energy Outlook 6, energy demand in the region will continue to grow by 2.8 per cent annually until 2040 if member states meet their national economic targets.
Since 2008, Germany and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) have been cooperating to promote renewable energy in the region through the implementation of the ASEAN-German Mini Hydro Programme.
Objective
The ASEAN Centre for Energy is strengthened in its role as a regional centre of excellence for sustainable energy.
