Context:
Most of Tunisia’s electricity is produced from natural gas, more than half of which is imported. This dependence represents a risk to the country’s energy security and places a strain on the state budget.
Yet Tunisia has considerable potential in the field of renewable energy. Making more use of renewable energy sources could relieve the pressure on the state budget and simultaneously foster long-term economic development through local value-creation.
Despite ambitious plans for the energy transition, there are still organisational, economic and institutional challenges to implementation.
Objective:
The strategic, regulatory and technical conditions for a faster energy transition in Tunisia are improved.
Approach:
The project works with the Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy (MIME) and the electricity supplier STEG:
- It improves the strategic and regulatory conditions for accelerating the energy transition, for instance by simplifying and digitalising administrative procedures.
- It expands the capacities of the grid operator and energy supplier STEG to enable greater integration of renewable energy.
- It develops training measures for new occupations in the field of renewable energy and low-carbon technologies.
In addition, the project focuses on developing rural regions. At the same time, it promotes digitalisation and gender equality in the energy sector.
