Promoting energy efficiency in Indian industry

Context

Activities to promote India‘s energy agenda have focused primarily on the Perform, Achieve, Trade (PAT) scheme, which has led to huge reductions in CO₂ emissions.

However, companies not participating still have limited knowledge about the latest energy-efficient technologies. They also lack the necessary skills to evaluate their effectiveness and profitability, which is important when making investment decisions.

The Energy Efficiency in Industry & Data project seeks to improve the ability of companies in the non-PAT industries in India’s steel and pulp and paper industries to implement energy-efficiency measures.

This will help boost India’s contributions in achieving the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and India’s long term goals for reductions CO₂ emissions in the energy sector.

Objective

Companies in India’s steel and paper sector that do not participate in emissions trading (PAT) are improving their ability to adopt energy-efficient technologies and measures. State designated agencies (SDAs) can better promote energy efficiency measures.

Approach

The project aims to improve the capabilities of industries as well as related associations and organisations at state level by the following activities:

• Capacity building of selected state-designated agencies (SDAs) to promote energy efficiency in non-PAT industries by analysing barriers and challenges.
• Providing non-PAT industries with information on key energy-efficiency processes and technologies, as well as providing access to an energy-efficiency web platform, MSME helpdesk and workshops and training courses.
• Institutionalising peer-to-peer learning among SDAs and non-PAT industry clusters and sharing experience gained from implementation and operation practices among non-PAT industry clusters, which can then be replicated in other states
• Pursuing cooperation with policymakers to further improve the overall regulatory framework for energy efficiency.
