Context

Morocco is pursuing an ambitious climate policy and is aiming for efficient, climate-friendly energy use. The predecessor project, Energy Efficiency in Morocco (PEEM), provided advice on regulations and strategies. It also supported energy savings for buildings, industry and public lighting. However, the country needs to use efficient technologies such as solar power systems on a larger scale, particularly in companies and public institutions with high energy consumption. It has also barely used new, cost-effective solutions, such as storage batteries, up to now.

Objective

Efficient, carbon-neutral energy technologies are used holistically and in an integrated manner by companies and strategically relevant public projects in Morocco.

Approach

The project works with the Moroccan Government to develop the institutional, regulatory, tax and organisational framework conditions for greater use of innovative technologies. In the Souss-Massa region, it also advises regional administrations on implementing the energy efficiency plan and incorporating climate-friendly technologies.

At the same time, the project assists companies and public projects in integrating innovative energy solutions. To ensure that these technologies are more widely used, the project works with public and private organisations, such as the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency, professional associations and education institutions, to develop training programmes and advisory services that have a long-term impact. It has a particular emphasis on gender-equitable vocational training. The project focuses on dialogue with German companies and specialist institutions, to put international expertise into practice in Morocco.
