Context
Latin America and the Caribbean share many values with Germany. However, social inequality, a lack of gender justice, political polarisation, organised crime and corruption are hampering the region’s stability and development, with women and vulnerable population groups particularly affected. In addition, weaknesses in the rule of law are undermining democracy.
The German Federal Foreign Office’s Latin America and Caribbean Initiative aims to address these challenges. Since 2019, it has been supporting governments, institutions and civil society in promoting democracy, the rule of law and gender justice. At the same time, it is creating dialogue opportunities for political and specialist discussions.
Objective
Relevant actors in Latin America and the Caribbean are promoting equal opportunities and effective law enforcement. They are thus supporting democracy and stability.
Approach
The project supports the German Federal Foreign Office’s Latin America and Caribbean Initiative.
It coordinates the Unidas women’s network, which promotes dialogue between Latin America, the Caribbean and Germany on women’s rights and gender justice.
The project also supports the Federal Foreign Office’s cooperation with partner countries on the rule of law, primarily through training for members of the judiciary on gender-based violence, to improve investigative and procedural processes and equal access to justice for women, girls and queer people. Further training focuses on corruption and money laundering.
The project also organises political dialogue for the Federal Foreign Office to discuss relevant German foreign policy issues with Latin America and the Caribbean.
