Mexican-German Energy Partnership
Several people are talking at an Energy Partnership stand at the Ministry of Energy’s innovation fair.

Context

Global energy supply structures are undergoing fundamental change. Wind power, photovoltaics, hydrogen and other technologies are key to this transformation and are giving rise to new trade relationships. The energy partnerships of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) facilitate regular dialogue with other countries on the topics of secure energy supply, decarbonisation and energy trading. Mexico has set ambitious targets for its energy transition and aims to expand renewable energy. Dialogue on energy policy and the exchange of technology are of interest to both Mexico and Germany.

Objective

Mexico’s energy transition makes it possible to expand renewable energy, ensure a secure energy supply and transition the economy to a carbon-free model.

Approach

The Energy Partnership facilitates political and technical dialogue through events, research, training, delegation missions and social media communication. Stakeholders from the public sector, the private sector, civil society and the scientific community participate in this dialogue.

The priority areas for the Energy Partnership include:

  • Political dialogue on energy policy, in which key stakeholders from the energy sector and the Private sector collaborate
  • Secure energy supply through the integration of energy storage technologies
  • Forward-looking energy markets and innovations that promote economic growth in both countries

The Secretariat, based in Mexico City and Berlin, coordinates the partnership. It acts as the first point of contact and source of information for all Partnership activities. The Energy Partnership is thus a key platform for dialogue on the energy transition between the two countries.
