Context

Given its arid desert environment, water constitutes a scarce commodity in Egypt. With over 90% of its water requirements met by the Nile River, the nation is increasingly challenged by the impacts of climate change and a rapidly expanding population. Consequently, the efficient and holistic management of water resources is indispensable for Egypt's sustained economic and social advancement.

Objective

In selected areas of Egypt, efficient water management secures the supply of water for the population and agriculture.

Approach

The project uses complementary measures to improve the water supply for the population and agriculture. It combines proven approaches with innovative ideas. In doing so, it promotes skills, experts and digitalisation.

In the water and wastewater management sub-sector, the project introduces climate-friendly measures to prevent water loss and improves management capacities. This enables the water utilities to supply the population with water more easily and in better quality. At the same time, scarce water resources are conserved.

The project is also developing efficient irrigation for climate-friendly agriculture. Successful model projects are available to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation as well as regional administrations in order to roll them out on a broad scale. The project is also expanding cooperation between the various ministries. Topics include technical issues, water-saving measures and networking managers. Particular attention is being paid to female managers.
