Background

Argentina wants to take stronger action against climate change. However, to achieve a low-carbon and climate-resilient transformation in the economy, the country needs support: It needs to improve the policy framework and build the skills of leaders in key sectors.

Objective

The Argentine Government is adapting the policy framework, and decision-makers in selected sectors in Argentina are implementing measures to make a low-carbon and climate-resilient transition a success. The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) will be approached with greater efficiency and ambition.

Approach

The project operates in the following areas:

(1) It supports the implementation of plans to restore forest landscapes (forest landscape restoration, FLR). The actions improve and restore the ecological functions and services of forest landscapes.

(2) It implements measures in the construction and metal industries that improve the enabling environment for sustainable consumption and production through resource efficiency.

(3) It contributes to the implementation of adaptation and mitigation measures in the transport sector.

(4) It improves the climate policy framework and access to climate finance (i.e. financial resources that promote steps against climate change).

The project is working with Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina (FVS), Fundación Avina, NewClimate Institute (NCI) and Universidad Nacional de San Martín (UNSAM) to implement these measures.

The project also cooperates with numerous Argentine ministries, in particular with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (Ministerio de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible, MAyDS).
