Context
Chad is one of the poorest countries in the world. The population is suffering greatly under the ongoing food crisis, which is exacerbated by climate change and frequent droughts. The effects are particularly severe in the northern provinces of Borkou, Ennedi and Tibesti, where the extreme desert climate makes daily life especially challenging.
The local communities have to cope with multiple disadvantages. They lack sanitary facilities, access to clean drinking water, electricity and appropriate agricultural methods. This puts the livelihoods of many people at great risk.
The municipal and civil society stakeholders need support to permanently improve people’s living conditions. Measures in the areas of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health, and climate-adaptive agriculture are especially important. The requirements are mainstreamed in local development plans.
Objective
Access to basic services such as water and energy, vocational training, and social and economic initiatives which support the local population is improved in the three municipalities Faya, Fada and Bardai. This makes the local communities more resilient to crises.
Approach
The project supports the municipalities by providing advice in three areas:
- preparing municipal and rural development plans with the participation of the local population;
- expanding basic services, especially by improving the supply of drinking water and electricity, and wastewater and solid waste disposal;
- increasing agricultural production. The project trains agricultural associations in the sustainable optimisation of cultivation techniques and small-scale irrigation.
