In 2023, there were 733 million people suffering from hunger across the globe. Around 2.8 billion people were unable to afford a healthy diet.
Throughout the world, people therefore need better access to an adequate supply of healthy food produced in an environmentally sustainable and socially just way. This is what the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) aimed to achieve by adopting its strategy on the Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems.
Objective
GIZ can work with its partner countries to shape the transformation of agricultural and food systems.
Approach
The project has three thematic priorities, which reflect the aspects that are key to transforming agricultural and food systems:
1. Agriculture
The project advises BMZ on how food producers can enhance their productivity, gain access to agricultural finance, improve their market integration and hence earn higher incomes. It also advises BMZ on political processes and on development partnerships with the private sector.
2. Climate and agrobiodiversity
In addition, the project provides advisory services on how to make agricultural and food systems climate responsive, biodiversity friendly and to minimise the pollution they cause. Protecting biodiversity, adapting to and mitigating climate change must be worthwhile for farmers. They need access to financing. The project supports BMZ by developing innovative and practice-oriented instruments and initiatives, offering partner countries guidance on how to implement their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) more effectively for agricultural and food systems, for example.
3. Agricultural policy
The project advises BMZ on agricultural policy conditions with a view to ensuring that the support provided to farmers by the government in the form of subsidies or tariffs is aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
Across the different priority areas, the project supports women and disadvantaged groups and promotes digitalisation in agriculture.
