Advising on development-oriented migration policy

Context

Migration is a global phenomenon that can offer opportunities for individuals and for countries of origin, transit and destination. There are many individual reasons for migration, such as education prospects and job opportunities or to reunite families. The impacts of climate change, too, are forcing increasing numbers of people to migrate.

Germany shapes migration policy in cooperation with its development cooperation (DC) partner countries, with various German ministries and with European and international actors. German DC aims to achieve regular, safe and orderly migration based on the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and on a feminist development policy. To do so, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) adopts a person-centred focus.

Objective

BMZ takes a development-oriented approach in shaping national, European and international migration policy.

Approach

The project advises BMZ on migration issues and strengthens its development-oriented position in national, European and international policy. The aim is to shape migration policy processes in a way that benefits migrants and countries of origin, transit and destination alike. To do so, the project contextualises current migration policy debates and works on practical lessons learned.

Advisory services currently focus on the following areas:

• regular and fair migration for work and training
• cooperation with migrant diaspora communities in Germany
• displacement and expulsion issues
• protection of migrants in vulnerable situations
• human mobility in the context of climate change.

The project supports a feminist development policy addressing multiple discrimination and is committed to gender equality, the protection of migrants’ rights and their participation, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
