Context

Global crises are affecting all countries in major ways, calling for a social-ecological transformation of economies worldwide. Germany’s partner countries face the challenge of transforming their economies with limited resources. The goal is to promote climate-neutral, environmentally friendly and resource-saving economies that are resilient and competitive. Everyone should be able to participate in the economy, especially women. Successful private companies are needed to create jobs that contribute to good living conditions for local people.

Objective

Approaches and strategies for a social-ecological transformation of economic systems to contribute to the UN’s 2030 Agenda are embedded in German and international development cooperation.

Approach

The project advises the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) on embedding social-ecological economic transformation in international cooperation.

The advisory services focus on:

  • long-term economic, structural and industrial policy
  • green industries and business models
  • environmentally friendly infrastructure
  • economic participation of women

The project contributes to BMZ’s development policy priorities, especially the Just Transition and feminist development policy.

Together with other intergovernmental donors, the project works closely with international networks such as the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development (DCED), the G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) and the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP). It advises BMZ on cooperation with multilateral development banks on long-term infrastructure development and cooperates with research institutions such as the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET).
