Context
The textile industry plays a key role in the economic growth of Bangladesh. However, many factories do not comply with social and environmental standards. The Accord on Fire and Building Safety (Bangladesh Accord) was a milestone for operational safety in the country and significantly improved working conditions for textile workers. However, central challenges still remain, such as the disregard for labour rights and violations of environmental legislation.
The RSC has taken on the mandate and organisational structure of the new International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry (International Accord), which was established in 2021. As a private national initiative, the RSC aims to continue the achievements of the Bangladesh Accord and improve working conditions in the textile industry. The RSC includes representatives of workers, industry and the global brands that have signed up to the International Accord.
Objective
The RSC monitors safety, labour and environmental standards in the textile and clothing industry.
Approach
The project supports the RSC with capacity building and organisational development, which also serves to improve digital systems for inspections and make them more transparent.
Furthermore, the project promotes cooperation between the RSC and the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) and the Department of Environment (DoE).
The project improves and prepares training materials and advisory services in line with international standards and supports workers in advocating for sustainability standards in factories.
