Context:
Social protection is essential for a life in dignity and counteracts poverty, hunger and inequality. The 2030 Agenda stipulates that everyone in the world should have social protection. Nonetheless, around 3.8 billion people worldwide have little or no access to social protection systems such as pension provision or health insurance. Germany is therefore promoting adaptive social protection systems that increase people’s resilience to individual life risks and collective crises.
Objective:
German development cooperation is providing greater support for the development and expansion of social protection systems.
Approach:
The project advises the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) on how German development cooperation can support its partner countries in giving more people access to social protection. It works in four fields of action:
Using social protection to cope with the effects of climate change,
Using social protection to improve resilience in displacement and crisis contexts,
Applying social protection as an instrument for creating decent and inclusive work,
Bringing about more efficient social protection through innovation and digital transformation.
By working in these fields of action, the project assists BMZ with technical design and positioning in international alliances and other bodies, agenda-setting, and preparing knowledge, evidence and communication formats. In addition, the project supports cooperation with EU institutions, multilateral development banks and international organisations such as ILO, the World Bank and UNICEF.
