The GIZ advisory project "Promoting sustainable development through cooperation with the United Nations" supports the policymaking of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) as well as the profiling of Germany's multilateral development cooperation, especially with the organisations of the United Nations Development System (UNDS).

The UNDS includes organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Organization for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), but also, for example, the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV).

The United Nations system is central for addressing multiple global challenges and is one of the central operating actors in implementing the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, the humanitarian development peace nexus, the Paris agreement on Climate Change and the International Bill of Human Rights. In order to fulfil its role as one of the largest donors to the UN system, Germany is not only shaping its own relations with the UN but also further develops and utilises alliances with other organisations and UN member states. Hence, the focus of the advisory project is twofold: 1) to provide input for improving institutional functionality of United Nations development agencies in line with German development cooperation priorities; and 2) to strengthen cooperation between partners of the System, and within. The project contributes to a strengthened multilateral system and its capacity to implement the 2030 Agenda. As a result, the project also contributes to the joint system’s capacity to address global crisis such as the Covid-19 Pandemic and the respective worldwide recovery.
