Context

The United Nations (UN) development system is a network of organisations and programmes that aims to improve people's living conditions worldwide. However, it needs to become more effective and efficient in order to accomplish its tasks. It should also be supported by its members in order to maintain the international order, achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and respond to crisis situations worldwide.

Objective

Cooperation between German development cooperation and the United Nations development system has improved.

Approach

The project promotes cooperation between German development cooperation and the UN development system. It thus improves Germany's steering capacity and the coordination mechanisms between the UN member states. This makes international cooperation more efficient and effective and results in synergies being utilised.

The project operates in two fields of action:

  1. Advising the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in its mediating role in shaping international processes
  2. Alliances

In both fields of action, the programme supports structural policy reform processes within the UN development system, through which the goals of the 2030 Agenda can be better achieved. At the same time, it promotes German contributions to the UN development system.

The project also processes lessons learned and prepares expertise and knowledge. It develops and validates innovative and scalable approaches, thereby improving  BMZ's innovative strength.

It co-operates with:

  • UN development organisations such as UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women and UNICEF
  • The UN Development Coordination Office (DCO)
  • The Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG)
  • The United Nations University (UNU)
  • UN-affiliated academic institutions

The German offices of UNICEF, UN Women e.V. and UNDP are also partners of the project.
