Context
Lebanon is grappling with a severe economic and financial crisis, worsened by currency devaluation, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 Beirut port explosion. As a result, high unemployment, poverty, and weak basic services continue to affect daily life. Agriculture and food industries remain heavily reliant on imports, while micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) struggle with limited access to capital and markets.
These interconnected challenges weaken value creation, reduce employment opportunities, and heighten food insecurity.
Objective
Vulnerable groups in Lebanon have improved their ability to cope with economic and social challenges.
Approach
The project addresses Lebanon’s economic challenges by enhancing the ability of farmers, MSMEs, local administrations, and civil society to adapt to new challenges in the country.
To achieve its objectives, the project:
• Promotes farming practices that boost regional value creation, employment, and resilience;
• Supports food-processing MSMEs by developing business continuity strategies and introducing renewable energy solutions;
• Encourages start-ups in the Green Economy to address gaps in the agro-food value chain;
• Facilitates participatory decision-making to build trust in local governance;
• Provides targeted support to vulnerable households through cash assistance, food production, and seasonal aid to reduce food insecurity;
• Upgrades infrastructure, including solar energy systems and irrigation facilities, to sustain agricultural activity.
Where possible, these interventions are geographically integrated for coordinated implementation.
