Context

Morocco faces many social and economic challenges that are exacerbated by the impacts of climate change and the degradation of natural resources. Therefore, the country’s political priorities include sustainable development and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Morocco passed a National Sustainable Development Strategy to enable the transition to a green and inclusive economy in 2017 but, as things stand, the national strategy does not make sufficient reference to the 2030 Agenda. Aligning its national strategy with the 2030 Agenda will enable Morocco to meet its national and international commitments to sustainable development.

Objective

National and regional decision-makers in Morocco successfully implement the National Sustainable Development Strategy while aligning it with the 2030 Agenda.

Approach

The project supports the Moroccan Environment Ministry in three areas:

  1. Aligning the Moroccan National Sustainable Development Strategy with the 2030 Agenda: The government receives support with continuous evaluation of its national strategy and development of a national plan for exemplary governance.
  2. Measuring sustainable development digitally: The project supports the country in implementing the national strategy by aligning and harmonising existing national and regional monitoring platforms. Additionally, it establishes an international partnership for knowledge transfer to monitor the implementation of the strategy through digital solutions.
  3. Fostering resilience in two pilot regions: The project is developing capacities of regional councils and civil society organisations in two pilot regions for integrating and aligning the Agenda 2030 objectives with regional development plans.
