Background
Many people in India are affected by water shortages. This is specifically due to agriculture, which consumes almost 85 per cent of the water. The impacts of climate change pose an additional threat to rural development.
Objective
India can implement its water strategy, Water Vision 2047, more effectively by improving rural water security and climate adaptation.
This has improved the water supply for three million people in rural areas, 500,000 hectares of land have been cultivated in a sustainable and climate-resilient manner and 60 million euros in Indian funding has been mobilized for water management.
Approach
The project advises officials on developing and implementing local action plans to promote water security.
In addition, it provides advice on how to better coordinate funding from governmental development programmes and non-governmental initiatives.
