Context
Malawi’s agri-food systems are facing huge challenges: extreme weather events, economic uncertainty and food insecurity are making life difficult for the population. The lack of adequate cooperation between government agencies, the private sector and civil society organisations hampers efforts to make the system more resilient, inclusive and efficient.
While the government does acknowledge the need for change, it lacks the expertise and management tools required to bring about sustainable and lasting change.
Objective
The local and national government institutions in Malawi are in a better position to drive the transformation of the agri-food systems.
Approach
The project supports the development of institutional capacities in different areas:
Districts: Local administrations develop strategies for safe, sustainable and green food production.
Knowledge transfer: The government adopts best practices derived from the districts in its national strategies.
Awareness raising: The project raises awareness among the responsible parties of how food, health and sustainable development are interrelated.
Women’s participation: The project supports women in administration and government to enable them to have more of a say in decision-making.
