Context

Ghana has huge potential to generate renewable energy, especially solar power. The Government is falling short in its implementation of strategies to support renewable energy and energy efficiency, however.

Objective

The share of renewable energy is increased and energy efficiency is boosted.

Approach

The project supports Ghana’s strategy to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. To achieve this, the project is contributing to the following measures:

  • Boosting grid stability through renewable energy, resulting in fewer electricity outages
  • Reducing the electricity consumption of public buildings and the private sector
  • Compensating households for the solar power they feed into the grid (net metering)

The state, energy suppliers and business associations are implementing the project together. These measures benefit Ghana’s entire population, businesses and the public sector, as they result in fewer outages, lower electricity costs and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
