Indonesia’s rapid urbanisation and economic growth have increased mobility demand, but public transport often fails to meet user needs. Local governments lack clear guidance and resources to develop integrated and inclusive public transport systems, particularly in metropolitan areas with high intercity travel. As a result, many urban residents rely on private vehicles, worsening traffic congestion and air pollution – while undermining Indonesia’s carbon reduction commitments.
Addressing these challenges requires developing inclusive, and eco-friendly public transport systems that reduce private vehicle dependency.
The institutional framework conditions for developing an efficient and competitive public transport system in Indonesian urban and metropolitan regions have improved for stakeholders in public administration and private enterprises.
The project aims to achieve three outputs to improve public transport systems in Indonesian cities:
1. It enhances governance capability for integrated public transport in selected urban or metropolitan areas.
2. The project provides knowledge resources and platforms for inclusive and gender-sensitive public transport development.
3. It develops essential components for integrating public transport systems in targeted cities.
