Context

Coal consumption in India is expected to decline sharply after 2035. Coal mine closures have a significant impact on workers and other stakeholders.

Objective

The sustainable closure and repurposing of abandoned and about to be closed Indian coal mines was initiated according to Just Transition principles.

Approach

The main activities are the development and implementation of plans and the development of capacities for the sustainable closure of coal mines.

The project also promotes gender-equitable socio-economic development in the affected regions.
