Context

Mobility is an essential facilitator for countries’ long-term development. However, urbanisation and motorisation are putting increasing strain on transport systems and air quality. Globally, transport accounts for almost a quarter of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, so ensuring a just transition in the transport sector is important in mitigating climate change.

Objective

Just and climate-friendly mobility has improved in selected cities in the Global South.

Approach

The project promotes concepts and measures to drive a global just transition in the transport sector. It works in the following areas:

  • Through the E-Bus Mission of the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI), it advises and supports cities worldwide on implementing measures for climate-friendly, just transport systems.
  • Through the MoVe Yaoundé component of the project, which is cofinanced by the European Union (EU), it improves the provision of green mobility services in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon.
  • Through the Sustainable Urban Mobility in Metropolitan Costa Rica component of the project, which is also cofinanced by the EU, it promotes safe, inclusive and low-emission mobility in the greater metropolitan area of Costa Rica (Gran Área Metropolitana (GAM)).

  • Through the international MobiliseYourCity Partnership, it supports cities and countries worldwide in developing mobility strategies and plans (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) and National Urban Mobility Policies (NUMPs)). This partnership facilitates the transfer of knowledge, promotes proven approaches, and supports cities and countries in implementing green mobility systems. With around 52 million euros in funding from the EU and the French and German governments, MobiliseYourCity has supported 32 SUMPs and 9 NUMPs. Through the 21 completed SUMPs and 6 completed NUMPs, member cities and countries have mobilised 2.92 billion euros to finance implementation.
  • It enhances interdisciplinary expertise on a just transition in the transport sector by providing knowledge products and training courses for decision-makers.
