Mozambique

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Mozambique since 1985.

Mozambique has extensive natural resources. Nevertheless, it is one of the least developed countries in the world. Around 60 per cent of the population are affected by poverty.

Most people live off the land to support themselves and their families. Efforts for a broader economic development of the country were hit hard by the 2016 debt crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, Mozambique’s recovery has been slow.

Mozambique lacks a nationwide electricity supply. Very few people use clean energy for cooking, particularly in rural areas. The availability of sufficient renewable energy is crucial for long-term development.

Furthermore, institutional structures remain weak, particularly in many municipalities. As a result, people frequently lack access to basic services. In the north of the country, armed attacks by extremist groups continue to occur. This conflict has already caused several thousand fatalities, and almost a million people have become internally displaced.

Our work on site: For employment and energy efficiency 

GIZ works on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (DEZA) in Mozambique. The priority areas of cooperation are:

• Sustainable economic development, training and employment
• Climate and energy
• Peaceful and inclusive societies

To improve young people’s access to training and jobs, GIZ is working to align vocational education and training more closely with the labour market. It is also creating jobs through cooperation with the private sector. At the same time, small farmers are being integrated into supply chains in order to boost their participation in economic development.

To stabilise supply, GIZ is promoting the expansion of renewable energies and greater energy efficiency. For example, it is improving financing and the use of clean cooking technologies. It is also supporting partners in Mozambique in developing a just and climate-friendly energy market.

With GIZ’s support, cities and municipalities can provide improved services to their citizens and facilitate greater participation in important decisions. In communities in the north that host large numbers of displaced people, GIZ is providing support to improve living conditions for those affected and strengthen social cohesion.
