Context

Over the last 20 years, Cambodia has achieved continuously high rates of economic growth, primarily driven by the textile, construction, tourism and agriculture sectors.

In order to press ahead with its modernisation and diversification plans, Cambodia aims to open up new business sectors, including food production, electrical engineering, electronics and components for the automotive industry

German development cooperation promotes business competencies in Cambodia and advocates for an appropriate conducive political and regulatory framework for the private sector. The aim is to increase value creation in the country, raise productivity and disseminate energy-efficient and climate-neutral technologies. Foreign direct investment is actively promoted as an important source of modern, climate-neutral technology, technical knowledge and access to new markets.

Objective

Digitalised and innovative Cambodian enterprises operate competitively in an increasingly interconnected and dynamic market.

Approach

In three of the country’s provinces, the ICONE programme is working to improve the competitiveness of Cambodian enterprises operating in an increasingly interconnected and dynamic market. ICONE focuses on:

  • Supporting the provincial administrations in Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap in implementing comprehensive economic development strategies. It pays particular attention to foreign direct investment, technological and geopolitical trends and facilitating access to customers and markets.
  • Developing the services and products of public and private sector providers in order to increase the productivity, efficiency and innovative capacity of national enterprises.
  • Boosting the competitiveness of local enterprises by improving company employees’ technical and soft skills, introducing digital solutions and implementing innovative and environmentally sustainable management processes and efficient manufacturing methods.
