Acceleration to net-zero emissions in transport

Within the framework of the project "Transport Initiative in Nationally Determined Contribution for Asia" (NDC-TIA), Viet Nam component", the Ministry of Transport in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH recently organised a comprehensive 5-day training programme on “Integrated energy system modelling for transport sector towards net-zero emissions” in Hanoi. The ultimate goal was to enable participants to enhance essential skills and knowledge to utilise TIMES model for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and develop energy modelling approaches and scenarios for achieving net-zero emissions in the transport sector by 2025.

The training took place at the Ministry of Transport, with participants hailing from various departments, institutes, and universities within the Ministry of Transport: Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Department of Planning and Investment , Viet Nam Register, Viet Nam Road Administration, Viet Nam Railway Administration, Viet Nam Inland Waterway Administration, Viet Nam Aviation Administration, Viet Nam Maritime Administration, Transport Development and Strategy Institute, University of Transport Technology, Viet Nam Maritime University, University of Transport Ho Chi Minh City.

The five-day capacity-building training on the Integrated energy system for transport sector towards net-zero emissions for calculating greenhouse gas emissions proved to be a pivotal step towards building the capacity of technical officials from the Ministry of Transport and relevant departments, institutes, and universities. This training initiative laid the foundation for a collaborative and data-driven approach towards transitioning the transport sector to a net zero emissions pathway. The knowledge and expertise gained by the participants will undoubtedly contribute to the development of evidence-based policies, effective stakeholder engagement, and the realisation of a sustainable and low-carbon transportation system. With a shared commitment to tackling climate change, the trained technical officials are now poised to drive transformative change and accelerate the transition to a greener, more sustainable future in the transport sector.

NDC-TIA is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). IKI is working under the leadership of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), in close cooperation with its founder, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Federal Foreign Office. In Viet Nam, the project’s implementing organisations are GIZ and partner institutions including World Resource Institute (WRI) and International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).
