Context

Nigeria has issues with its electricity supply: around 45 per cent of the population have no access to power. The rate is even lower in rural areas, and individual states, including in the north-east of the country, are particularly hard hit. At the same time, the households and companies connected to the grid often have only irregular power supply. They therefore depend on emergency power generators, which they usually run on fossil fuels.

The poor power supply is significantly hampering the country’s socio-economic development.

Objective

The Nigerian energy transition is progressing by expanding renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency (known as EnEff) and improving energy access and electricity supply.

Approach

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and advises public and private actors in the following areas:

  • Spreading modern cooking energy
The project advises companies that sell modern cooking stoves on how to organise and expand their sales activities in rural and peri-urban areas more effectively.
  • Introduction of ‘premium grid’ electricity grids with renewable energy
The project provides advice on creating the contractual conditions for projects that expand electricity grids for renewable energy.
  • Promoting energy efficiency
The project increases EnEff in industrial and commercial companies as well as in buildings by providing expert advice and promoting energy efficiency networks.
  • Supporting state actors in the energy transition
The project provides new or revised instruments such as policies and guidelines to implement public strategies and action plans for the energy transition.
  • Offering training and certification
The project is expanding the existing training and certification programmes so that Nigerian specialists can gain qualifications in renewable energy and EnEff.
