Context

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is a key neighbouring region of Europe. It faces ongoing political upheaval, which brings with it immense social and economic challenges. At the same time, the MENA region has great potential in areas such as climate action, energy, business and employment. As one of the largest bilateral donors, Germany is supporting the region in realising this potential and shaping transformation processes.

Objective

Strategic advice makes it possible for the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to organise its commitments in the MENA region flexibly and sustainably. It can react to changes in an informed manner and make forward-looking adaptations to development policy.

Approach

Due to the complex challenges in the MENA region, the project advises BMZ on strategically significant thematic areas. These include:

Human security

Through analyses and collaboration with German and regional experts, the project contributes to generating knowledge on the topic of human security and promoting its implementation. It also supports BMZ in shaping and implementing feminist development policy in the MENA region.

Just transition to a green economy

The project advises BMZ on approaches to socio-ecological transformation in the MENA economies. Advisory services are also provided in the areas of digitalisation, climate change and the environment.

Strategic partnerships and alliances

Cooperation with local, regional and international stakeholders is becoming increasingly important in view of the current challenges. The project therefore advises BMZ on shaping strategic alliances and partnerships.
