Initial situation
Climate change has a major impact on agrifood systems. At the same time, these systems account for 31 per cent of harmful greenhouse gases globally. Without a contribution to climate action in agrifood systems, it will therefore not be possible to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change and to limit global warming.
Objective
The institutional, strategic and financial conditions have improved in the partner countries Bolivia, Nigeria and Cambodia as well as regionally and globally, in order to implement ambitious climate action in agrifood systems.
Approach
The programme promotes climate action in agrifood systems. It thereby contributes nationally, regionally and globally to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. The programme operates in three fields of activity:
- Policy advice: It develops science-based climate policies and institutional frameworks for agrifood systems. It advises national governments on the monitoring, planning and implementation of measures to reduce greenhouse gases from the agri-food sector. At the same time, it assists with improving global, collective support for climate negotiations and the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) in agrifood systems.
- Empowering civil society representatives: It supports social organisations, particularly women, young people and indigenous peoples, in disseminating innovative, gender-equitable and inclusive approaches for climate-friendly and resilient agrifood systems.
- Promoting financing: It improves legal and practical requirements for investing in climate-friendly and climate-resilient agrifood systems. It develops financial products and business models for climate action in the agrifood sector together with national and regional financial institutions and international development banks.
