Context

The Project Development Programme (PDP) assists German companies which are seeking to enter emerging and developing countries. The markets there are dynamic and very promising but they also present companies with new challenges, such as political instability, difficult access to finance or a shortage of skilled professionals.

GIZ runs the PDP as part of the German Energy Solutions Initiativeon behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). The activities are currently concentrated in 16 countries in South-East Asia, south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.

Objective

Acting within the BMWi’s German Energy Solutions Initiative, the PDP supports German suppliers of climate-friendly energy solutions in entering the rapidly growing markets in developing and emerging countries. The programme develops financially viable energy projects there and raises capital from commercial banks and private investors.

In taking these steps, the programme contributes to the global transition to renewable energy and to sustainable economic growth in Germany and in the partner countries.

Approach

In view of the market dynamics and the challenges, the PDP, together with the GIZ projects and the German Chambers of Commerce Worldwide Network, locally develops appropriate solutions with a view to developing the markets, promoting partnerships between German and local companies, and advancing specific renewables projects.

Technologies and know-how for an climate-friendly energy supply that are ‘Made in Germany’ are in demand worldwide. More and more governments, but above all companies, are becoming aware that renewable energy sources and energy efficiency reduce dependence on fossil resources, play a part in mitigating climate change, and help to reduce costs and increase competitiveness.

The German Energy Solutions Initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) helps suppliers of climate-friendly energy solutions in tapping to foreign markets with a view to carving out a position for German technologies and know-how worldwide. The focal points here are renewable sources of energy, energy efficiency, smart grids and storage systems. New technologies, such as power-to-gas (a process in which green electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen by means of electrolysis) and fuel cells, are also increasingly coming into the picture.

The support is aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular and provides assistance with preparing, exploring, entering and securing the market.

The German Energy Solutions Initiative helps German companies with the following:

  • Gathering information on the market,
  • Evaluating export markets and avoiding risks,
  • Establishing business contacts abroad and deepening existing relations,
  • Saving time and money when entering the market,
  • Generating a profile as a provider of quality products ‘Made in Germany’

The support strategy of the German Energy Solutions Initiative is the result of continuous discussion and coordination with German industry. Direct up-to-date information from the foreign markets forms the basis for the annual review of the selection of countries and the planning of measures.
