Proklima, integrated ozone and climate protection
PROKLIMA – Naturally cool
How do we cool a warming world?
Temperatures are rising worldwide – as is the demand for cooling appliances. Refrigeration, air-conditioning (RAC) and foam are becoming more and more important, especially due to a growing population, increased urbanisation and economic growth in emerging and developing countries. However, this does not only apply to the cooling of living and working spaces. It also plays a crucial role in the food and health sector: Over 50% of vaccines are lost worldwide every year because of interruptions in the cold chain and 20% of all the world’s food spoils due to poor cooling.
The paradox: Cooling has a significant impact on climate change due to its high greenhouse gas emissions. We find ourselves in a vicious circle, because the growing demand for cooling is also heating up the climate through increasing emissions, in turn increasing the demand for cooling… Our goal is to significantly reduce these emissions trough Green Cooling.
What is Green Cooling?
Green Cooling stands for technologies, which use natural refrigerants that neither harm the climate nor the environment, but possess the same or better energy efficiency. In over 40 developing and emerging countries, Proklima implemented more than 240 projects that promote integrated ozone and climate protection by using natural refrigerants and natural foam blowing agents.
How do we work?
On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), GIZ’s Proklima program is addressing these and related environmental issues concerning various applications of cooling and foam blowing technologies available for transfer into our partner countries to assist them in developing “green growth economies”. Proklima’s services comprise policy advice and capacity development for governments, training and qualification, and pilot projects for industry partners, which facilitate green technology transfer and help to promote a sustainable future.
