SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

In Lesotho, we work with the local community to ensure that they farm the land along the Orange River sustainably, and preserve ecosystems. This protects their livelihoods while safeguarding water supply for millions of people further downstream.

UNICEF and GIZ have been working together for around 15 years. This is particularly beneficial in crisis regions, explains Verena Knaus. As the head of UNICEF in Berlin, she is responsible for the partnership with Germany.

Cities and municipalities are increasingly entering into development partnerships. For the first time, a study has demonstrated the positive effects these can offer – for both partners.

Susanne Schmeier is Professor of Water Cooperation, Law and Diplomacy in the Netherlands. Her research shows that conflicts over water can be managed proactively – ideally with international support.
