We mourn the loss of a colleague in Niger

On Saturday, a GIZ staff member was killed in a vehicle ambush in Niger. The exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear.

On Saturday, a vehicle belonging to the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH was ambushed near Agadez in Niger. GIZ can confirm the sad news that the driver of the vehicle was killed in the attack. A further staff member sustained minor injuries. Both were local staff from Niger.

‘We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, and by the incident,’ said Tanja Gönner, Chair of the GIZ Management Board. ‘Our thoughts are with the family and friends, with our injured colleague and with our team in Niger at this difficult time.’ Every effort is being made to provide support.

The vehicle was stolen during the ambush. Niger’s police force and National Guard are investigating the incident, which took place approximately 40 kilometres from Agadez.

GIZ has been operating in Niger since 1968. On behalf of the German Government, it works in the country to promote rural development, support decentralisation efforts, and strengthen state structures.
