Context
Agriculture supports 63 per cent of Burkina Faso's population. However, producers and processors encounter limited skills and restricted access to essential resources, which hampers economic growth and job creation. Soil degradation, fueled by unsuited farming practices and climate impacts such as rising temperatures and prolonged droughts or floods, further erodes productivity and resilience. In addition, cross-border trade with Mali, Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana faces weak institutions and mounting pressure on shared natural resources. Insecurity and conflicts have displaced people, causing farmland abandonment and increased strain on resources in host communities, compounding the challenges for local populations.
Objective
Producers and processors working in local and cross-border agri-food production and trade have improved their economic performance by adopting environmentally friendly farming methods and building resilience to climate change.
Approach
The programme, co-financed by the European Union, advances market-oriented value chains, focusing on rice, cassava, soybean, mango and poultry for their potential in productivity, processing, marketing, and food security. It implements the following measures:
•Facilitating technical and operational reforms to support producers and processors;
•Improving interest-based service provision along value chains;
•Delivering practical training to value chain stakeholders;
Creating jobs and business opportunities for youth, women, displaced and vulnerable groups in selected value chains in the programme area.
