Climate and Energy Partnership Uruguay-Alemania

Context

In 2023, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMKW) and the Uruguayan Ministry for Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) signed a declaration of intent to establish the Climate and Energy Partnership between Uruguay and Germany.

The partnership fosters high-level dialogue between policy-makers from the two countries and supports the exchange of ideas among industry, energy institutions and research centres to advance the energy transition in Uruguay in the long term.

Objective

High-level participants from politics and the private sector in Uruguay and Germany meet regularly in a coordinated manner to exchange ideas. They thus accelerate the ‘second energy transition in Uruguay’, in which transport and the economy switch to electromobility and green hydrogen.

Approach

The project regularly organises meetings between the energy ministries in the two countries and promotes knowledge sharing through specialist events, workshops and training trips. There is a focus on green hydrogen and its derivatives, energy efficiency, electromobility and the storage of surplus renewable energy. As part of this, the project involves representatives from public institutions, industry, associations, research bodies, financial institutions and societies.

Two permanent secretariats in Santiago de Chile and Berlin coordinate the partnership’s activities and are the first points of contact for all participants.

The project works with the following actors:

  • German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN)
  • German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
  • Federal Foreign Office (AA)
  • German-Uruguayan Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Uruguay)
  • National Administration of Power Plants and Electrical Transmissions of Uruguay (UTE)
  • Energy and Water Services Regulatory Unit in Uruguay (URSEA)
  • Ministry of Environment of Uruguay (MA)
Politiker unterzeichnen die Absichtserklärung zur Gründung der Energiepartnerschaft.
