Context

The transport sector contributes to greenhouse gas emissions in Georgia. Growing motorisation is worsening the air quality and impacting the living conditions in urban areas. In contrast, rural areas suffer from limited mobility options, which especially affect women and low-income families. The lack of a national framework hinders the provision of inclusive, regional and local mobility services.

Objective

The Government of Georgia, regional authorities in Adjara and city administrations in Tbilisi and Batumi are successfully implementing reforms for a sustainable mobility transformation.

Approach

Connect Georgia supports the creation of a national framework for sustainable urban mobility. This involves establishing an intragovernmental working group to formulate a shared vision and action roadmap. The project provides specific implementation proposals, guiding national actors with customised technical support towards transformative reforms for sustainable and connected mobility.

In Tbilisi and Batumi, Connect Georgia works closely with city leaders and local communities, the project implements pilot infrastructure measures to provide inclusive and sustainable solutions on the ground for citizens and localities.

To meet the travel demand between rural and urban areas for economic opportunities, Connect Georgia is forming a transport alliance that transcends municipal borders. This initiative not only meets current demands but also lays the foundation for increased investment in developing Adjara’s regional transport services.
