Context
Iraq is considered to be a fragile state and is yet to arrive at a place where it is on track for full recovery. The war in Syria and the terror caused by the so-called ‘Islamic State’ in Iraq have resulted in forced displacements. This has caused more than 250,000 refugees and over 1,180,000 displaced persons to seek refuge in the autonomous region of Kurdistan.
More than four years after the victory over the Islamic State and two years since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Iraq continues to face major challenges. While economic conditions are gradually improving, the outlook remains subject to significant risks posed by structural challenges. Unemployment and poverty remain high among all population groups – especially internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, returnees and the population of the host communities.
Objective
IDPs, refugees, returnees and members of the host communities are gaining better access to income and income-generating activities.
