Up to 90 per cent of deforestation worldwide is caused by agricultural producers expanding their land, particularly for products such as coffee, cocoa, natural rubber, palm oil, beef, soya and wood. The EU is a major importer of these raw materials, which is why it has adopted the European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR).
A contribution has been made towards deforestation-free, climate-just and legal agricultural supply chains.
The project combines three objectives: sustainable agriculture, improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers, and the protection of rainforests in Africa, South America and South-East Asia. In ten countries, it works with public and private partners to address key topics. Training is also provided to parties responsible for public data infrastructure, traceability, forest monitoring, a strong civil society and green financing.
Disadvantaged groups, such as indigenous communities, young people and women, receive support in raising awareness of their concerns. The project integrates their needs into agricultural training courses.
Further aims include strengthening regional dialogue, connecting key decision-makers and improving understanding for international regulations such as the EUDR.
The project is a flagship of the Team Europe Initiative, through which European countries work together to promote deforestation-free supply chains. It supports EU member countries and implementation partners in coordinating their efforts, carrying out public relations work and exchanging knowledge.
Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the project is cofinanced by the EU and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. It forms part of the Fund for the Promotion of Innovation in Agriculture (i4Ag) implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
