Approach
The Energy Partnership focuses on several areas, including:
- Promoting renewables and integrating them into the electricity grid
- Establishing a regulatory framework to support energy efficiency
- Developing long-term energy scenarios
- Supporting Algeria’s strategy for green hydrogen
The Energy Partnership is headed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and the Algerian Ministry of Energy. It also brings representatives of the two governments and state energy authorities together to discuss these topics. This includes the German Federal Foreign Office, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Algerian state energy companies Sonatrach and Sonelgaz.
In addition, two open working groups on renewable energy and energy efficiency provide a platform for representatives from business, the research sector, associations and initiatives to come together and contribute their projects. Since 2024, there has also been a working group that promotes approaches for producing green hydrogen in Algeria and exporting it.
The project has two secretariats based in Algiers and Berlin. They provide an initial point of contact and platform for stakeholders and anyone interested in the topics to find out more about the Energy Partnership.
