Context
The Paris Agreement calls for more ambitious measures to limit global warming. Economic and development activities must be more sustainable, particularly in the areas of agriculture, ecosystems, transport and energy.
Latin America is contributing significantly to climate stabilisation, but greater political commitment is needed to address numerous challenges such as urbanisation, political instability and the threat to biodiversity.
Objective
Decision-makers in Latin America are better empowered to implement the Paris Agreement. Energy and transport systems, as well as agriculture in partner countries, have been aligned with climate goals, ecosystems and biodiversity are better protected, and greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced.
Approach
The European Union is cofinancing the project, supporting 18 partner countries in increasing the effectiveness of their climate policies and driving forward the ecological transformation. As part of this, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is working with international partners in various priority areas:
• Urban mobility (with Agence Française de Développement, AFD): Developing environmentally friendly urban transport concepts and financing systems.
• Climate-resilient food security (with Expertise France, EF): Financing and implementing pilot projects on climate-adapted agriculture for smallholders.
• Forest, biodiversity and ecosystems (with EF): Providing project-related capacity development and technical advisory services.
• Climate-friendly energy systems (with AFD and Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID)): Promoting an energy transition in the private sector.
In country dialogues at the political level, the project identifies new activities based on the needs of individual countries to implement nationally determined contributions.
