Context:
Algerian municipalities are still only at the start of their energy transition. Local authorities lack the structures and technical resources to implement energy action plans. Moreover, stakeholders need to work more closely together to improve the climate efficiency of municipal services. Civil society engagement needs to be reinforced.
Objective:
Climate efficiency in Algerian local authorities has improved and energy consumption has been reduced.
Approach:
The project supports pilot regions in developing effective energy measures and engaging civil society. The aim is to establish the necessary structures and promote cooperation between stakeholders.
The project has three fields of activity:
Supporting Algerian municipalities in expanding their technical capabilities for energy-efficient services. All 1,541 municipalities are receiving appropriate training. A digital information system for energy management is available to the municipalities. Selected municipalities are receiving technical advisory services.
Advising the authorities on establishing organisational structures for climate-efficient services. The administrations are adopting quality standards and best practices from other municipalities. Climate-friendly measures are being implemented in 30 municipalities.
Involving citizens in planning and implementing measures and raising awareness of energy efficiency and renewable energy among around 100,000 people. Women are particularly encouraged to participate. Funding is provided for at least two female-led initiatives.
