Context
Mauritania is highly dependent on revenue from raw materials such as gold and iron. This economic sector accounts for 19 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) and 76 percent of exports.
For lasting economic development, Mauritania must derive the greatest possible benefit from this industry. This requires local supply chains and good employment in industrial and artisanal mining. At the same time, however, the country must also limit environmental damage, initiate reforms of legal and information systems, and take institutional responsibility.
Objective
The economic, ecological, and social situation in Mauritanian mining has improved.
Approach
The project advises the national government authorities on:
• Expanding the potential of local businesses to supply the raw materials industry with goods and services.
• Enhancing the performance of vocational schools so that they can train skilled workers with up-to-date knowledge.
• Improving working conditions and ecological sustainability in artisanal gold mining.
• Promoting transparency and good governance in this economic sector.
