Context

In various international forums, the German Government is fostering cooperation among a number of nations in support of the common effort to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. This approach is referred to as multilateral development policy.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) therefore works to achieve these goals through its ‘Strong multilateral development policy for social justice worldwide’ strategy. It is committed to improving international cooperation and strives for cooperation based on reciprocity and respect in a world characterised by unequal power relations.

Objective

BMZ strategically aligns German development policy priorities and anchors them in international forums and processes. There is a particular emphasis on creating partnerships, particularly with countries and non-state actors from the Global South.

Approach

To achieve its goals, the project implements three components:

  • Providing policy analysis and strategy advice: The project advises BMZ on implementing the current multilateral strategy and supports coordination and networking with German and international actors. It also prepares analyses and conducts strategic foresight on multilateral development policy.
  • Supporting committee work in multilateral formats: The project advises BMZ on shaping development policy for the Group of Seven (G7), the Group of Twenty (G20) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Here, it incorporates aspects concerning the promotion of gender equality into the advisory process.
  • Shaping transformative partnerships: The project supports BMZ in developing new partnership formats. It also contributes to anchoring the objectives of feminist development policy internationally.
