Context

Peru is one of the countries most severely affected by climate change. At the same time, it has a crucial role to play in climate action, as it has the world’s second-largest area of Amazon rainforest and a great deal of biodiversity.

In 2022, the German and Peruvian Governments therefore signed a bilateral Climate Partnership.

While the country has climate regulations that include mitigation and adaptation measures and a long-term climate strategy, Peru nonetheless needs support in the implementation of its nationally determined contribution (NDC). It is also essential to promote collaboration between the most important stakeholders, as well as cooperation projects.

Objective

Peru is implementing its NDC under the Paris Agreement more effectively.

Approach

The project supports the Peruvian Government in achieving its climate goals. The priority areas are energy and forests, which play an important role in reducing emissions. The project also promotes biodiversity conservation and supports the national climate policy.

To this end, it advises the Peruvian Ministry of Environment (Ministerio del Ambiente, MINAM) and other stakeholders in Peru’s climate policy. It is the Peruvian interface project in the International Climate Initiative (IKI), and as such it promotes cooperation between IKI projects in the country and between Peruvian and German authorities. A Gender Community of Practice is also being created to better embed equal opportunities issues in climate policy.

In addition, the project takes part of the secretariat for the German-Peruvian climate partnership and in this way contributes to its success.
