Context

The Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development set ambitious international targets for climate action as well as climate-friendly energy production and consumption. In 2023, the final report of the first global stocktake further called for a more rapid and climate-friendly energy transition.

This requires energy supply to be based on renewable energies, lower energy consumption and greater energy efficiency. At the same time, governments must phase out the production and use of fossil fuels while abolishing climate-damaging subsidies. Considering the continuous high level of global greenhouse gas emissions, all countries must act decisively to cut emissions at a much faster pace to keep the 1.5-degree target within reach.

Objective

Partnerships and international initiatives on energy transition and climate protection have defined more ambitious climate and energy targets and accelerated their implementation.

Approach

The project advises the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) on international measures that connect energy and climate policy. It supports the BMWK in shaping long-term energy and climate strategies, advising on framework conditions for renewable energies and climate-friendly technologies as well as on mobilising private resources for the global energy transition. The project further supports the ministry in its participation in multilateral processes, such as conferences organised by the United Nations (UN) on climate change.

Additionally, the project provides advisory services on implementing the Climate Club, which Germany initiated at the end of 2023. This open and inclusive forum helps ambitious countries work towards industrial decarbonisation in line with the Paris Agreement.
