Context

The government of Nepal seeks to provide reliable, affordable energy to support the economic growth of the country. However, much of Nepal’s renewable energy resources remain untapped and the country still suffers from an energy deficit. Almost two milllion people do not have access to modern energy services.

Furthermore, the country does not use its available energy resources efficiently. Thus, Nepal remains highly dependent on imports of coal and fossil fuels which increases its national trade deficit and greenhouse gas emissions.

Objective

Regulatory, institutional and private-sector conditions in Nepal are enhanced in order to promote and implement renewable energies and energy efficiency.

Coordination with female entrepreneurs’ association for the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Approach

The government of Nepal promotes renewable energies (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) for a positive socio-economic development in the country. The project, co-financed by EU, includes the following key activities:

  1. Identifying potentials to conserve energy and to reduce emissions in industries and enterprises in Nepal,  mobilising private sector investment in energy efficiency measures.
  2. Supporting women and disadvantaged groups in enhancing their capacity to participate in energy-related decision making processes at subnational level and  in the provision of improved modern energy services to citizens.
  3. Supporting the necessary preconditions to promote the private sector in providing energy services through renewable sources to people living in Nepal. The steps include setting up regulatory, financial, and institutional frameworks.
